Gucci Garantine

From fattwiki

Gucci Garantine, also known as her alter ego Saint Dawn, is Clementine Kesh's rival, a former vassal and political attache to House Brightline of Stel Kesh, and the current commander of the Blue Channel on Palisade.

She and House Brightline have ties to the “radical reformist” (read: terrorist) organization HORIZON.

Appearance[edit | edit source]

She is a Black woman with vitiligo[note 1] who wears a lot of red, gold and black.[1] Her facecast is the model Amy Deanna.[2]

As her alter ego Saint Dawn, she hides her identity with metallic, golden face paint forming a “major sector” geometrical pattern on her face, covering her eyes, forehead, and cheeks.[3]

In her first appearance she wears a black, form-fitting synthetic fabric suit with red piping and a golden necklace that doesn’t clasp around the front, but hangs around the back of her neck. Her hair is in a natural pompadour that curves to the side, with cornrows, and decorated with a fancy barrette.[2]

Gucci attends the funeral in "A Palace During a Wake" in a red dress with very wide puffy shoulders. It's shaped like a triangle or a pizza slice. In "HOUNDs Pt 2", she wears a "beat to shit" dress uniform.

Personality[edit | edit source]

Gucci is idealistic, clever and rich. She has an air of "being completely in the right place wherever she is" due to her history as a Kesh noble.[1] Though she is committed to working against the Principality, her priorities are "macro-scale" rather than focused on individuals and she steers away from actions that might "turn the masses against her".[4] In PARTIZAN, she favors the Party of the Masque precisely because of concerns over optics.

At the beginning of PALISADE, she remains a reformist. She is committed to the Cause but has little faith in its longevity.[5]

After Kalvin Brnine single-handedly kills Dahlia, Gucci realizes that the revolution is capable of effecting change beyond her previous imagining, and reaffirms that she is committed to it until the end.[5]

She has a tendency to use themed names during operations (for example, naming locations of interest in the Orzen infiltration mission after condiments).[6]

History and Involvement[edit | edit source]

Gucci grew up wealthy. She attended the Nideo school Artwright (as did Veronique, after Gucci graduated). She also grew up with Clementine, although Gucci is a year or two older.

PARTIZAN[edit | edit source]

As Saint Dawn, Gucci interferes with the Rapid Evening's attempt to recover the body of the Divine Past by attempting to kidnap the scientist Cardiff Reach. She later hires SBBR to steal information on Past's crash from a Palace facility in Orzen and participates in the theft.

Valence invites her to the conference that established Millennium Break, and Gucci and her HORIZON crew agree to join. She quickly becomes an influential figure and gets involved with organizational efforts for various operations. She is injured during the conflict in Vigil City over the Equiaxed commune.[note 1] After Millennium Break takes Cruciat, she and Apparatus Aperitif lead diplomatic talks with the Isles of Logos. Her side of Millennium Break, which was in favor of a slower, ideological campaign, emerges as the Party of the Masque.

After "Operation: Shackled Sun", the Party of the Masque appears to have waned more or less completely.

PALISADE[edit | edit source]

As of "HOUNDs" Pt. 1 and 2, Gucci has abandoned her identity as Saint Dawn. Her family has been denounced by the Principality and Nideo propagandists decry "how far the House of Garantine has fallen".[7] She is kidnapped by the Divine Fealty, but later released.

Over the five years between PARTIZAN and PALISADE, she becomes a leader of the Cause, a secret coalition of allied organizations working to oppose the Bilateral Intercession's invasion of Palisade. Specifically, she commands the Blue Channel faction. The unit under her command consists of the Blue Channel and a few other guerrilla cells. She has been described as "revolutionary deep state" and a functionary to the powerful whose institutional knowledge makes her essential.[8]

Relationships[edit | edit source]

Clementine Kesh[edit | edit source]

She and Clementine grew up together doing rich people sports and continued to be friends as adults. They are mechanically rivals in PARTIZAN, and initially suspicious of each other due to their separate clandestine activities.

Onboard Icebreaker Prime, Gucci is at least a little sympathetic to Clem, but it's complicated.

They encounter each other again during "Operation: Shackled Sun". Gucci directs Millennium Break's forces from the Reflecting Pool and the two engage in petty sniping (offscreen).

Kal'mera Broun / Kalvin Brnine[edit | edit source]

In PARTIZAN, Broun believes themself to be exploiting Gucci by charging her for repairs on HORIZON mechs without going through the Scrivener's Guild, although Gucci apparently does not notice. She trusts Broun to keep information on her HORIZON activities quiet.

In PALISADE, Broun (now called Brnine) is the captain of the Blue Channel, a Tier 5 Carrier that is very useful to the Cause. Gucci is their commander. Their relationship has been described as "fucked" and "terrible".[9]

Despite the bad vibes, Gucci genuinely cares about Brnine in a personal and not only professional capacity, though she doubts whether Brnine cares about her. When she first heard about Palisade, she imagined that she and Brnine could work together on the planet like (a romanticized version of) a Primary and a Satellite.[10]

Following Brnine's return from deactivating the Stellar Combustor and murdering the Glorious Princept, Gucci's feelings about them are implied to be romantic in nature. She credits their actions with showing her that the revolution provides possibilities beyond incremental reform.[5]

Bond (Kingdom)[edit | edit source]

  • Broun knows how to get things done and I know what they want in return. But there’s a difference between service and loyalty, and I don’t know when or where they’ll draw that line.

Mech[edit | edit source]

Gucci's mech in PARTIZAN is the Transgress Oblige, an old Independence Mk II with the ability to stun onlookers.

Notes[edit | edit source]

  1. 1.0 1.1 In "Millennium Break: Breaking Vigil" it is noted that Gucci's vitiligo is comorbid with other autoimmune conditions, including rheumatoid arthritis. Part of her recovery from her injuries in the Vigil assault included working on rehab with other disabled members of Millennium Break, such as Eiden Teak.
