Devotion was created by Grand Magnificent, who wanted to create something that would be completely helpful rather than harmful. The Devotees traded a little of their vitality in order to live as a radical collective on the surface of the sun Volition. Devotion acted as "the new moon of that sun, a sort of deep eye that orbits around it and provides for the people". However, the Curtain interfered with Devotion at the beginning of the Perfect Millennium in order to exploit it and its followers.[2] They replaced Devotion with an abusive demiurgic copy. The original Devotion's power is being sapped by this replacement, slowly killing it, while its wings are metaphorically and possibly literally chained down somewhere in the Quire system.[3]

The Road to PALISADE

Devotion was behind the Devotees creating mirage bombs which forcibly expanded the Mirage out towards Palisade.

Despite the leaders of the Twilight Mirage telling her not to, Devotion plants Mirage bombs throughout the Palisade system. One of them is accidentally triggered by a surge and glitch in the Perennial Wave.[3]

Abilities

Devotion can create Mirage bombs which expand the Twilight Mirage.

It drains the life force from its cult members over time, using it to empower itself. It is also able to speak to some of its followers through their blood, send them visions, synchronize their pulses, and transport them to strange places.

The life force-draining ability is harnessed intentionally by Devotee soldiers who pilot mechs powered by Devotion, such as the Chariot Mk. 2 or the Cataphract. At their pilots' command, these mechs can drain blood in order to go into an overdrive or berserker mode.[4]

Devotion has empowered some, like Coriolis Sunset, physically transforming them in the process. These followers must follow Devotion's precepts or risk Devotion taking back their special abilities.
