The Brink began its life as a spy satellite of the Rapid Evening's Mirage Division meant to monitor The Divine Fleet and the planet of Quire. It was the housing for the consciousness of Grey Gloaming, and equipped with a fail-safe stellar combustor meant to destroy the system in the event of a major threat to the rest of the galaxy. When that threat did occur, the combustor was scuttled by Grey and Demani, who worked with the Divine Fleet to prevent disaster.
After the Miracle of the Mirage, Grey Gloaming and her partner Demani Dusk turned the Brink into a space shipping hub, truck stop, information brokerage, smugglers' den and diner where Grand Magnificent was later seen, and employed Morning's Observation as a dishwasher.
With Dusk and Gloaming running the diner, the Brink as a faction maintained an investment in the well being of the galaxy around them, warning Grand Magnificent, Tender Sky, and Fourteen Fifteen of the upcoming threat posed by the Dark Day and Crystal Palace.
PALISADE[edit | edit source]
Appearance[edit | edit source]
In the time of PALISADE, the Brink has grown significantly. The station is described as nail-shaped, wide and circular at the top and coming to a point -- it's compared to the Orbital cover art or to Omega Station from Mass Effect. Ships have simply been welded permanently to the outside of the hull near the wide 'base' of the station. Battle damage from a recent attack by the Principality is mostly visible in the people mobilized to perform repairs to the hull.
Inside the Brink, bioluminescent algae in light tubes are used for lights, and there's a lot of directional signage which varied suggestions for different types of mobility needs. Community gardens keep the Brink at least partly self-sustaining, but recently there's been an outbreak of grasping "helping vines" which have spread through the station. An invasive species of bird is another station nuisance. Displays occasionally catch messages from out-station, primarily garbled signals from Palisade.
The Brink is powered both externally by solar panels and solar netting and internally by a large furnace (which has been partially converted into a spa).
Interior locations include:
The Brink is maintained and managed by a group of volunteers called Brink Proxy.
History[edit | edit source]
This section is under construction. Please excuse the mess.
It is one of the few places in the Mirage that can make contact with the outside, as it is located near the edge of the Mirage. However, it does move, sometimes slipping between the Mirage itself and its exterior. It has recently been attacked by forces from the Principality, leading to inner conflict about how its residents should respond to the nearby war in Palisade.
