Episode description[edit | edit source]
Recognizing that further confrontation with the Magistrates is inevitable, Marn, Es, Duvall, and Pickman do everything in their power to control the circumstances of that showdown. They choose the time and the place, do a little research into what they're up against, and try to add a few loose weights to their side of the scale. If they should come out ahead, Blackwick will be free from this siege. But, ah, don't it seem like there's always one more thing in the air than can be easily juggled?

Having captured the sniper Ennib Lee, the Blackwick Group (and their Shape Knight allies) split: Pickman heads to the train station to figure out what is keeping the trains away, Duvall joins Es on the roof of the Open Hand Trade Hall to attempt to interrogate the prisoner, and Marn looks for Dr. Kerr Kern to send word to the Magistrates for a meeting. While the group raise the idea of summoning The Red Zephyr, Bucho and Alekest san Geraint find this shocking, and the plan seems to be more of a hostage exchange with the threat of whatever the train might do as backup.
Pickman and Alekest make their way safely to the train station. In there, they find a violet rope on cords with the ends red and wet: the first of three omens that Es saw in the mirror last episode, and evidently the way in which the priest Lejune Borr is using powerful magic to ward off danger. The ends of the rope draw Fulmina's lightning on the floor as they move in the wind. Marn uses her contacts in town to be passed through various people's homes unseen, along with Bucho. In the fields outside, she sees a crying calf — the second omen — led in circles by a person whose face begins melting, revealing them to be made of wax. Many of the townspeople have similarly been replaced or controlled by the vampire Alaway.
Marn meets Dr. Kerr at the Automat, where she is distributing sandwiches. After first not believing Marn, she agrees to take a message to the Magistrates setting up a meeting that night in the train station; Marn points out that she is free to believe this is a trap, and offers her sanctuary at Roseroot Hall. Duvall and Es dither over what to ask their captive, as they have a good amount of information already. Ennib keeps looking to the sun during their conversation, and finally says, when Es threatens to cut her throat, that Lejune Borr will be there in six minutes to check on her. Es flies her down and ties her to a tree in the woods by the train station, while Duvall is able to walk out inconspicuously. Lejune finds nobody on the roof and is shocked, and on alert while she refreshes the ritual at the station; however, Pickman is able to copy down what she is doing, gaining d4 notes and the ability to undo the spell by retracing the fork of the lightning backwards.
That night at the train station, Es, Duvall and Pickman hide to be able to jump out later, while Marn, Ennib Lee and the two Shape Knights stand on the platform to meet the Magistrates (and Telluricist). Rebek Semm is utterly confident and refuses to back down from what she sees as justice. Gren Voznik shows absolutely nothing to Es' aura vision, and a gold tooth (the third omen) glints in his mouth, seeming to move around despite him being utterly still. It then falls out, as his body begins to bubble up and spout out inside his suit of plate armor, turning into formless wax.
