Opening[edit | edit source]

Meyer Leopold DU-vall. Now, why did I put the emphasis on…? I must be getting tired here near the end of my run, I suppose. The new format and all that. Anyway, tiredness is something I suspect Duvall knows quite intimately. Not that the rest of the erstwhile Blackwick Group hasn't been through their own trials and tribulations, but by and large, I would define those that Duvall traveled with as confident about who they were. Even Chine at the end there, torn between friends and, let’s say, vision. They knew who they were. Day in, day out, Duvall has been trying to answer something fundamental, like trying to invent a whole new part of speech just for himself.

Plot[edit | edit source]

Austin and Art prepare to play their game of Ichor Drowned. Austin draws a joker, which, as per the rules of Ichor Downed, asks them to involve the Heart into the game, bringing in aspects to make this game unusual or strange. Art and Austin decide on the idea of Chine haunting Duvall, and bring Dre onboard for the episode, who was originally going to be absent from the finale altogether.

Duvall chooses to leave Blackwick with It, travelling home to Aldomina as he promised Reese in their last encounter. A small spider joins Duvall on their journey. Duvall takes shelter in a cave only to find a strange giant’s forge, long abandoned but still warm, where a skeletal Chine appears to join him. Duval apologizes for the events in Blackwick but Chine holds no ill will, feeling that it was inevitable. It is unsure of the skeletal Chine, seemingly afraid to be disappointed if it isn’t really them. As Duval takes a strange hammer from the forge before he leaves, it twists further, trying to make Duvall to bend to its shape. The Spider stops the hammer from changing Duvall further.

As they continue, Duvall and Chine encounter a Cleaver hunting lodge, where a group of Cleavers are becoming an Angel. The Spider encourages Duvall to go inside while Chine warns strongly against it. It runs towards the lodge, but Chine insists that Duvall doesn’t follow, because the Lodge will kill him if he enters. To protect the group Duvall invokes the Structure, which pushes the Cleavers back from their angel state, and pulls them away from their connection to the Course. Chine is glad their friends are okay, but makes no judgments on Duvall’s actions towards the Cleavers.

As they approach Concentus, the group is set upon by some remaining members of the Glim Macula who identify Chine as something monstrous. The Spider offers to sew up Duvall so they can pass as human, while Chine immediately starts to fight the Glim Macula agents. Rather than stay out of it, Duvall stands with Chine to fight the agents. Art presents the idea that Duvall’s luck fascination has always been a curse, and as Duvall finally understands that, they push it off onto the Glim Macula, making them incredibly unlucky, and the group is able to defeat them.

As they stand outside Concentus, Duvall offers to use their torch to summon the Red Zephyr so that Chine can stay alive there much like Jolyon. Chine appreciates the offer, but declines, saying that it would just end up the same as last time. Having seen Chine fight, It calls Chine’s name and leaps into their arms, causing Chine to collapse into a pile of bones. Seemingly unbothered, It takes one of the arm bones, and begins to play with it. The episode ends with Duvall and It playing fetch, and Chine’s bones scattered.
