This is my city. And something’s wrong with it.

Goldfinch is a former Bluff City superhero who currently resides in Blough City under the name Gale Green. She first appeared as the narrator of the opening of "The Grapplers Down at Promenade Arena Pt. 1".

She is a gay woman, and her former partner is Waxwing.

Appearance[edit | edit source]

At the time she is seen in "Messy Business", she is 43 years old, and is described as being the “mid-century image of perfection”,[1] with blonde hair and blue eyes.

Early versions of her superhero costume included a beaked bird mask (which she later called "hideous") and all-black wings.[2]

History[edit | edit source]

Life in Bluff City[edit | edit source]

Born in Blough City, she left as a young girl, and was adopted by the de Lanza family as Dorothy de Lanza.[3] At some point, Hector Hu painted a portrait of her when she was a child (Gale Green on a Bench). Although much is unknown about this portrait, it does have supernatural qualities and is thought to be of Blough City origin.[4]

She met her future superhero and romantic partner, Waxwing, at pro wrestling tryouts. They began working together a year later.[5]

At one point, she and Goldfinch worked a bank robbery which Waxwing believed involved Mr E Masque and the Coast Guard. This was the same incident that Hector Hu told Florence Slowly was perpetrated by the Coast Guard. However, because Goldfinch rejected this theory, the case was pinned on someone else.[4]

After working as a superhero in Bluff City for many years, she decided to return to her home in Blough City, hoping to use art to help the people there gain the freedom that Bluff City had.[6] This move separated her from Waxwing, an event which was painful for both of them.

Return to Blough City[edit | edit source]

Back in Blough City, Gale worked as a filmmaker and radio producer whose work often pushed the boundaries of social mores, alongside Hector Hu and Blake Blossom. While planning the Citywide Film Festival, she set up a temporary office in the Courtyard church rectory. Her office contained scripts, typewriter, an inbox full of letters, and a photo of Waxwing and herself together in happier times.[3] Hector Hu considered appointing her as the director of one branch of an organization meant to fight the Concern (along with himself, Heard, Maggie, and Chris), but it is not known what became of this plan.[7]

By the start of "Extracurricular: Out Of Time", she became more of a patron of the arts. She was a figure of rumour in Blough City, hosting large parties at her estate. Although she was approached by the Whitakers to be part of the Tunnel Project, she declined, believing it to be a real estate venture and therefore something she had little interest in.

Like many of the citizens of Blough City, she suffered memory loss after "Messy Business", forgetting many of the specifics of her prior life. This included her relationship with Waxwing, although she was aware she was forgetting someone important ("I keep reaching for someone’s hand, and it isn’t there").[8]

Her home in Blough City is a massive cliff-side estate located to the north of the city, where she often hosts parties. The house has a large driveway and many rooms including a big entry hall, a master closet, a music room (with a piano), a dining room, a parlor room for receiving guests, a library, and a private study (nicely furnished, with lots of dark wood). Her staff includes multiple doormen and valets.[9][8]

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • As well as being Bluff City's Superman, her civilian names ("Dorothy" and "Gale") are a likely reference to Dorothy Gale, the main character of the Oz books and film, who was swept away to another world.
