Plot
The story begins with a prologue scene in which Dovey notices the suitors' toy designs; Carroway's cat designs and Mellow's wagging dog tails. She first approaches Carroway in the Glacier Express strudel shop, explaining that she is looking for a collaborator to work with in her shop, Penny Many-Things. Their discussion is briefly interrupted when Carroway is distracted by a new pastry on the strudel train, but continues on as she shares her breakfast with Dovey.
After this, Dovey approaches Mellow in Penny Many-Things to compliment her dog tails. They are interrupted by a MaGuddans representative, Mr. Click, attempting to recruit Mellow to make clocks for the department store. As an independent toymaker, this infuriates Mellow and she is unable to focus on her conversation with Dovey.
It is then revealed that a witch has cursed the Marchmont Velvet Mill, which supplied velvet to all the craftspeople in town, including the toymakers. They are now facing a critical shortage during the holiday season and all three meet to discuss what should be done.
Dovey offers to open up her personal stores of velvet to the town, which will cause her to be short on toymaking components. Mellow suggests they investigate the details of the unknown curse, as she has been cursed since childhood and finds it very livable. Carroway wants to seek the aid of the Odd Job Boy's counter-witch, Hexed Linus, which will be especially expensive during the holidays. She does not have the money for this and Mellow makes no offer to help, though she feels guilty about it later.
