After the Procession Day event, Chatelaine’s attempt to mend the relationship between Diego and Henrietta comes to nothing, as Diego has been swayed by the rumors about Henrietta’s involvement in Honor’s disappearance. Both he and Henrietta receive mysterious letters signed S. Molly, requesting access to all correspondence with or from Honor for investigative purposes.

Diego begins recruiting for his newly chartered private mercenary company, the Flint Regulars. Using a search for the fugitive Albrecht Sameday as pretense, he intends to establish operations in the woods in advance of going into business with James. Henrietta runs a newspaper ad opposite Diego’s recruitment spot emphasizing the Sameday family’s support of the manhunt in an attempt to prove her innocence.

During Lieberklase, Henrietta meets with Sharp Molly, an Odd Job Union investigator looking into the monument theft. She complies with his request to look over correspondance with Honor, despite an inherited distrust of unions. James calls Diego and Mint to his family estate, Vandernoir. Offended at Diego’s initiative, he attempts to bring him back in line, but Diego refuses to compromise his independence in their business dealings. Mint is unimpressed by James’ grandstanding and her opinion of him is even further diminished by his continued disregard for her home, though she maintains cordial relations.

Meanwhile Chatelaine appeals to Anastasia on Henrietta’s behalf, but they insist the break in communication is instructive and redirect to rumors that Marzie is an illegitimate Pellier.

As Diego prepares for his first expedition into the woods, his host Darling expresses concern about the risk he’s taking, which he interprets as a request for him to leave her home. He returns from the woods with a new adventerous reputation, which he must rely on for housing. While staying at the Pellier’s, a parade of Odd Job Boys visit to vouch for Sharp Molly. Given her credentials, Diego sends off all his correspondance with Honor and a sealed letter to be delivered if he is alive and can be located, expressing his desire to run away together.

With the Flint Regulars expanding operations further into the wilderness, Albrecht turns up on Henrietta’s doorway looking for refuge. She instead turns him over to Diego, who is left wondering what direction to take his company now that their stated goal has been accomplished. As the militia celebrates, a family friend of the Charlises and witch of the Velvet Manor, Hilda, arrives in town to visit Mint. Mint welcomes her old caretaker at the same time that she strikes up a flirtatious correspondence with the enigmatic Marzie.
