This article is under construction. Please excuse the mess.
When an agent of the almanac pressed this mysterious, masked figure for more information about him, they only repeated their name, as if to ensure we’d print it right, adding “Dyre with Y but Ode as you’d like, a poem said in praise or a debt gone unpaid. It bothers me little, how you spell that name.”
Dyre Ode or Dyre Owed is a mysterious figure in the world of Sangfielle, seemingly playing a different game. He is friendly towards the Blackwick Group.
Spoiler warning! This article contains major spoilers for Sangfielle. Tread carefully! |
Appearance
Dyre is an enormously tall (taller than Pickman), thin figure wearing a long black cape. He has a mask for every occasion, hiding his skeletal figure: he is nothing but bones. He has long, thick dark hair, delineating the shape of his head.
Dyre has some bones back, including some ribs, a hand, the skull (as of Roseroot Hall) and the sternum (as of Hark! The Citadel Beneath), but many are missing, causing clothing to drape oddly. Their isolated bones are oddly cuboidal, and engraved with grooves and markings.
By "Six Travelers: Es" he has recollected his bones, along with 100 extras, each from a different person. In the tower in Concentus he briefly appears as he did when he was non-skeletal: golden-skinned, with long hair pulled into a topknot and decorated by a guan.
Outfits
In "The Secret Ledger of Blackwick Hall", he is wearing a Venetian bauta mask, a tricorn hat, a long black cape over a colorful vest, and gloves.
In "Market Day in Blackwick", Dyre is described as wearing a long black cape with a bright green and red dragon mask. Later, as he prepares to leave Blackwick, he has on a moon-shaped mask with a silver halo.
In "Hark! the Citadel Beneath Pt. 2", Dyre is wearing a mask mosaiced in blue, turquoise and teal stones that resemble ocean waves.
History and Involvement
Dyre Ode was born in Roseroot long before the Panic, possibly before Aldominans colonized the heartland. They developed great power and, at the end of their natural life, sought to give back to their birthplace by donating their skull to Aterika'kaal.
Around the time of the Panic, Dyre donated many of their bones to protect the people of Sangfielle. Their sternum was given as a gift to the people of Sapodilla in recognition of their selflessness and hospitality in letting people in, and (until Episode 31) protected the city from the Shape, the Course, and various other manifestations of the truth of the heartland, allowing it to flourish.
Dyre currently believes that he needs his bones back in order to use a greater power to defend people from what may be coming, and has enlisted the Blackwick Group to aid in this recovery.
In "Six Travelers: Es", he and Es head north, to where the mountains run through Concentus, alongside Gasto and his angel. They find Dyre's heart at the base of a tower, powering the wards of Concentus which wall Sangfielle away from the rest of the continent. When his heart is returned to his body, the wards collapse and Dyre disappears, after thanking Es for her help.
