Opening[edit | edit source]
Plot[edit | edit source]
Carroway begins her quest for a counter-witch by speaking to Loyal Duncan. She learns that while Hexed Linus comes to town once a month to receive oranges from the Odd Job Boy union, the next orange day isn't for three weeks. If she wants to meet Linus sooner, she will need to provide the oranges herself. Luckily Dovey's distant aunt happens to have an orange farm. However, Carroway's plea for help is nearly disrupted by a problem customer demanding toys designed by Dovey's ex-partner, Spencer Crisp, who left to work at MaGuddans. Carroway manages to satisfy her by stepping into the role of a Penny Many-Things shop attendant and Dovey agrees to help provide oranges.
Meanwhile, Mellow invites Dovey to collect velvet donations from other businesses in town. At the Glacier Express they meet new manager and wife of Spencer Crisp, Marguerite Crisp. She offers to help with velvet from Spencer's stores, leftover from their time at Penny Many-Things and unneeded now that they are supplied by MaGuddans. Charity from the department store is distasteful to Mellow, who accepts the gift in poor grace. However, she and Dovey bond over the awkwardness of the situation and decide to get dinner at The Landslide speakeasy to take their minds off things.
As a blizzard sweeps through the mountains, Carroway must recover her stranded shipment of oranges. She spends the last of her savings to hire the Mountain Retrieval Brigade to brave the storm and rescue the wagon. Since the brigade is composed mostly of St. Bernards and a few people, they are unable to pull the horseless wagon and only a fraction of the oranges are recovered.
At the town's holiday market, Spencer Crisp finds Mellow at her stall and proposes that they collaborate on a new paw shaking mechanism on behalf of MaGuddans. Despite the promise of good pay, Mellow adamantly turns him down. She vents about the incident to Dovey later, worried that she overreacted by dismissing the opportunity out of hand. With Dovey's support, she comes out of it more determined than ever to achieve her dream of becoming a toymaker on her own merits.
After taking on the role of emotional support through these crises, Dovey has become more connected to both the suitors.
