I left the Nobel. We were conquerers. I left the Nobel. I did not wish to be a conquerer. I fled as far as I could. I came here, to the Fleet, and found the Fleet would be conquered too. I fled.

Lattice is a Nobel traveler whose digital ghost appears on the stage of the Affliction Refrain when it manifests on the Isle of the Broken Key.

Appearance[edit | edit source]

They have a body like a dress mannequin filled with purple gas, and they smell like Valence.

History and Involvement[edit | edit source]

Lattice fled the Nobel and joined the Divine Fleet because they did not want to be a conqueror. In time it became clear that the Fleet would be destroyed, so they fled the Fleet as well and donated themself to a living archive of the Fleet in its most utopian days. This archive is now known as the Affliction Refrain.

Lattice happens to be the person projected on Refrain's stage the night that Kalvin Brnine first encounters Refrain. They tell Brnine a bit about their history and how they came to donate themself to Refrain's archive before speaking to Brnine as Refrain. Brnine is unsuccessful in their attempt to convince Refrain to join the Cause that night, and they decline Refrain's offer to have them join its archive, but they leave Lattice/Refrain intrigued.[1]

In the PALISADE finale, Brnine seeks Refrain out and requests to speak to Lattice. Through Lattice, Refrain expresses its desire for more perspectives to add to its archive. Brnine and Refrain strike a deal: Refrain agrees to ally with Millennium Break and not to assimilate anyone into its archive without express consent, and in return, Brnine gives it permission to ask members of the Cause if they will donate themselves to its archive. Lattice, specifically, becomes a continuous presence on the Blue Channel following this deal.[2]
