Clawed is the Divine Crusade's Knight of Books.[1]
As a member of Crusade's retinue, Clawed has a chance at becoming the next Elect of Crusade: should anything happen to Gentian, one of Clawed, Perevel, Ignadiah or Ramondre will be the next Elect.[2]
Appearance[edit | edit source]
Clawed is huge: he's muscular, 6'5" tall, and generally built like a brick shithouse. The book he carries, which is leather-bound and looks old and worn, is so big that Clawed struggles to carry it;[2] he has to hold it with both hands across the book like a hug. Nevertheless, he never puts it down, even when he's piloting a mech.[3] When Gentian consults the book, he kneels and becomes a book stand.[4]
Personality[edit | edit source]
Like all members of Crusade's retinue, Clawed is highly competitive. He sees Perevel, Ignadiah, and Ramondre as his rivals.[2] He is above the repartee of the rest of the retinue, however, and does not talk very much.[3]
History and Involvement[edit | edit source]
During Gentian's picnic in the Bontive Valley, Clawed is gently reprimanded by Gentian for complaining that the group's time would be better spent fighting the Concrete Front.[2]
Clawed accompanies Gentian to the meeting in which the Bilateral Intercession and Frontier Syndicate uncover the factions of the Cause. Late in this meeting, Gentian consults the book, allowing the assembled parties to successfully identify their enemies.[4] He later takes part in Crusade's siege to take back Carhaix, where he fights and nearly kills Jesset City.[3]
Mech[edit | edit source]
Clawed pilots a Broadfork. Because he must hold the book with both hands at all times, he pilots it with his legs and brain.[3]
