Chimera's Lantern is one of Palisade's moons. Its appearance is strange and eerie, and it is the source of many folktales among the peoples of Palisade.

Appearance[edit | edit source]

Chimera's Lantern looks like a wasp's nest or a "fucked up asteroid". Its shape is similar to a Bloodborne lantern: tall, rectangular, and tapered.[1] Like a lantern, it occasionally lights up at night for reasons unknown to the general public. This mystery is the source of numerous folk sayings and ghost stories on Palisade.[2]

Close up, the surface of Chimera's Lantern looks like a barren rock with low hills and pockmark-like craters and holes. When it glows, the glow comes from within those holes and craters.[3] The Mosaic Gyratory lies within its body.[3]

Chimera's Lantern also contains mausoleums for dead Divines who have come to rest within it. These include, among others, the Garden of Souciance,[4] the Chamber of Loyalty, Bounty's Cocoon, the Court of Dissent, and Barricade's Rib.[5]

History[edit | edit source]

Lore[edit | edit source]

Chimera's Lantern first lit 5,000 years prior to the events of PALISADE, during the embarkation of the early Principality from Palisade. It is said to have "called on the tides to lift themselves up to flood the nascent Principality and harm them." It also empowered people who were trying to fight against the Principality by letting them become "the best versions of themselves", a combination of self-expression and epic heroism.[6]

In truth, the force that drove the burgeoning Principality from Palisade was the Chimeric Cadent, the now-ancient being who lives in Chimera's Lantern and guards the bodies of deceased Divines that lie within it. Chimera's Lantern is a sanctuary and final resting place for Divines who wish to die and to be free of their masters; the Chimeric Cadent protects those Divines from being forced back into service to the Principality.[4]

PALISADE[edit | edit source]

During the Divine Principality's occupation of Palisade, Nidean forces land on and claim control over Chimera's Lantern. They call this mission Operation Lamplighter.[1] They claim to be mining the moon for some sort of powerful mineral with the intent to eventually terraform and colonize it.

The Figure, Thisbe, Coriolis Sunset, and Midnite Matinee go to Chimera's Lantern in search of a new source of magic for the Figure, so that he can finally be free of the Witch in Glass. They find the Mosaic Gyratory and meet the Chimeric Cadent,[4] who grants Figure his freedom.[7]
