Sherlock Homes: Consulting Detective is a board game designed by Gary Grady, Suzanne Goldberg, and Raymond Edwards which inspired/influenced the rule set used in Friends at the Table on the two occasions when the characters have been deputized by The Golden Lance to investigate a murder.
Basics[edit | edit source]
In Sherlock Holmes: Consulting Detective, the players are the Baker Street Irregulars, charged with investigating a crime on behalf of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. To do so, they must move across London, interviewing suspects and witnesses, and scour the newspaper for clues to solve the mystery before reporting their findings to Holmes and Watson.
Adaptation[edit | edit source]
In Hieron, the parts of Holmes and Watson are played by Golden Lance investigators Victoria Solomon and Dr. Gloria Lake. The deputized players are presented with a city map and Solomon and Lake's notes on possible persons of interest to the case. The cases in Friends at the Table have been original creations, not based on the cases in Sherlock Holmes: Consulting Detective.
As players travel to different parts of the cities where they are investigating, they make investigation rolls based on how many party members are there. A partial success allows players to each ask one question or use one of their Dungeon World moves to gather information. A complete success also gives the group some bonus piece of information.
Travel can be difficult, and moving to places farther across the city takes time, requiring players to spend turns going through gates or hub areas.
