Three years prior to the events of To Be Young Near the Shore, Frank went on a trip to the American Magazine Museum and was able to look at all the back issues of The Man From Greckston, an action comic magazine about a spy/action hero type from the early 20XXs). She also gave herself the summer project of taking apart a VCR to learn how it worked.
