The Elects are the specially selected pilots of Divines, synthetic beings of enormous power revered by the Divine Principality.
The role is comparable to the Candidates who bonded with Divines created by the Autonomous Diaspora, or the Excerpts who operated in The Divine Fleet. However, while the Candidate acted as a component of the larger machine, and the Excerpt worked in partnership with their Divine to play a religious leader, the Elect's function seems distinct from both. The two Elects of the Divine Commitment, for example, experience complete ego loss once inside in order to focus completely on their piloting[1], implying Divines may have a greater influence over the self-hood of an Elect than their earlier counterparts.[2] While Commitment seems to be the most extreme example, this dynamic continues in many Divine/Elect relationships, such as Hyacinth's years of servitude in the Black Century as the Elect of Motion.
When the philosophy of the Resonant Orbit shifted to become Asterism, the Divines came to embody the best aspects of the state itself, and as such the Elect became the ideal citizen of the Principality, whom everyone should model themself after.[3] The constellations of Asterism, "organizational diagrams and schema that are meant to 'clarify' your position in society"[4], understand house leadership as connecting the Elects to the leader of each Stel and to their Divine, meaning they are expected to work in harmony towards a three-way leadership.[5]
The Swordbreakers are an elite unit of Apostolosians who target and kill Elects.[6] However, due to the internal conflict presumed by the Principality's structure, there are treaties in place which allow the Elect's bodies and the wreckage of Divines to be reclaimed afterwards, as they are "so important to the Divine Principality writ large".[7]
