Gray Gloaming, also referred to as Satellite, is an observer of the Divine Fleet for the Rapid Evening. Her dispatches begin each episode of the Planet Game. Demani Dusk is her immediate superior and partner.
Appearance
She is a space station and literal orbital satellite. Gray also uses wheeled, humanoid "shells" with a "round, humanoid brown-bronze upper body speckled with gold dust" affixed to a chassis to get around the station. She has a "cherubic face" that's "framed by a synthetic bob."[1] She has a similar frame that hangs from the ceiling in a secret room in the station and can project predictive hard light holograms with Rapid Evening tech. Like the wheeled shells, it takes the form of a bronze metal torso.[2]
Personality
She is "bright and shiny and optimistic"[3].
History and Involvement
Gray is the daughter of Keen Forester Gloaming and a former human. Her father recalls a day "a long time ago" when she was younger and went "running through the backyard during a sunshower…laughing".[4] Having become a Satellite for the Rapid Evening some time after being taken off Cycle, her consciousness now inhabits a space station in the outskirts of the Twilight Mirage.
In order to protect the people of the Mirage, Gray and Demani scuttle the stellar combustor in Gray's station when Volition emerges as a threat. Their refusal to push the button leads to a shadow war within the Rapid Evening, supported by those loyal to Demani and Gray, until Crystal Palace declares the Mirage stabilized.[5]
After the Miracle, Gray and Demani have gotten engaged and built an artificial asteroid out of space debris around Gray's station. They run a gathering place (described as a space shipping hub, truck stop, information brokerage, smugglers' den and diner) known as the Brink there. They welcome misfits like Morning's Observation (who first becomes a dishwasher for their diner and then part of their found family) and work to protect the Mirage from events like Dark Day.
