The Independents are a group of people who worship Independence. Former residents of Quire who survived the war and conflict brought on by Independence, they were found by Curiosity, who brought them into the Fleet. They want to revive Independence, and some even plan to incorporate the Divine into the Fleet.[1] Armstrong claims that within the Fleet, they've had a lot of freedom of movement due to Empyrean's sympathy for survivors.[2]

They kidnapped the Doyenne while working to revive the corpse of Independence, but she had her own ideas. Echo, Even, Gig and Grand Magnificent find their Quire base in "godspeed, glory Pt. 2", where the Doyenne's communication with the Iconoclasts is revealed, along with her plan to use Grand Magnificent's schematics for Independence.
