Empyrean is the final Divine of the Divine Fleet, and is the original creator of the Twilight Mirage.
Appearance
Empyrean is described as resembling a large bird, and is often seen flying around the Mirage.
History and Involvement
Empyrean holds a powerful position in the Divine Fleet, both as the creator of the Twilight Mirage itself, and as the last remaining Divine and Excerpt pair after the Death of Gumption.[1]This propels both Empyrean and Blooming into positions of authority, with Cascara and the Beloved Dust reporting directly to them.[2] After the creation of the Mirage, Empyrean becomes more distant to the people of the Divine Fleet, and even more so after the death of Gumption.

Some time after the death of Gumption it is revealed that Empyrean has not just been distant from the fleet, but also largely unresponsive to their own Excerpt, Blooming. Blooming has been hiding this in an attempt to hold together the fleet. It is then revealed that after the death of Gumption, Empyrean simply left its body, leaving only Chthonic, who’s disembodied ghost-like presence drifted through the Fleet. The last remaining energy of Empyrean is used up in the final fight against Independence, and the Divine is well and truly dead. [3]

A version of Empyrean briefly reappears when Signet, Echo, Even, and Gig encounter Ache. This version is piloted by Ache’s version of Signet, who has taken complete control of the Divine. Our Signet uses Exuvia to upload data about the original Empyrean and Blooming into this version of Empyrean, causing them to revert back to their old form, with Blooming as their Excerpt. Both Blooming and Empyrean fade away shortly after in the wake of the Second Miracle. [4]

It is revealed in the final moments of Twilight Mirage that the Divine Free States have been able to use the remains of Gumption to recreate a version of Empyrean under their control.[5] This is later renamed to the Divine Imperium, and is under the control of the Divine Principality in Partizan.
