Basalt Caldera is the ex-lover of Eliza Cinder. Mechanically, he is the Knife in Eyes of a Killer. Eliza and her co-conspirators Claxton Cascade, Gabrielle Feldspar, and Sanidine Vug framed Basalt for the murder of Eliza's father.

Basalt is a born-warm whose family went dormant a few generations before the start of Eyes of a Killer.
He discovers a new vein of lava, which has the potential to make him much more powerful in born-warm society. This is a problem for born-warm and power-serving lays like Gabrielle Feldspar, Sanidine Vug, and Claxton Cascade because he is popular among the lays and the born-warm do not want their social order threatened.
