Roan is a hobgoblin fighter. They appear first in Stewpot as a former naval fighter who becomes a scholar and tavern worker; as of the Quest games, they have returned to the fighter life but with the help of new scholarly expertise. They wield a legendary weapon, a quarterstaff that is also a gun.
As a hobgoblin, Roan has red skin and a lion-like face; Austin references a particular image of a D&D 5e hobgoblin holding a quarterstaff. They are tall, wide-shouldered, and hairy, with a deep widow's peak and dark hair. As very long hair is part of traditional hobgoblin masculinity, they keep their hair relatively short. They have pointed and angular sideburns.
They wear ornate plate armor. After the Stewpot game, they added leather bookstraps and pouches over top to carry their books and notes.
