The Understanding is a group of six formed during the Second Spring. They conducted a false flag operation against the Grey Duke and his people using augury, in order to get them to ally with the Last University (staging the magic as reconfiguration done by Galenica).
Benjamin ends up investigating the group and using his own augury to discover their names, which he reveals to everyone. Adaire, Hella and their family flee the University and do not return, fearing retribution. Sunder also fled earlier, but is caught up to by Benjamin and returned to the University. After the shakeout, all former members of the Understanding are removed from positions of power. In particular, the Golden Lance that Victoria Solomon was a member of is dissolved by Throndir, and Ephrim retires to a cottage to garden.
