When an agent of the almanac pressed this mysterious, masked figure for more information about him, they only repeated their name, as if to ensure we’d print it right, adding “Dyre with Y but Ode as you’d like, a poem said in praise or a debt gone unpaid. It bothers me little, how you spell that name.”

Dyre Ode is a mysterious figure in the world of Sangfielle, seemingly playing a different game. He is friendly towards the Blackwick Group.

Spoiler: The Secret Ledger Arc

This page contains information that is a spoiler for The Secret Ledger. If you do not wish to know the secrets of the heartland, please turn back.

Appearance

Dyre is an enormously tall (taller than Pickman), thin figure wearing a long black cape. He has a mask for every occasion, hiding his skeletal figure: he is nothing but bones. He has long, thick hair, delineating the shape of his head.

Dyre has some bones back, including some ribs, a hand, the skull (as of Roseroot Hall) and the sternum (as of Hark! The Citadel Beneath), but many are missing, causing clothing to drape oddly. Their isolated bones are oddly cuboidal, and engraved with grooves and markings.

Outfits

In Market Day in Blackwick, Dyre is described as wearing a long black cape with a bright green and red dragon mask.

History

Dyre Ode was born in Roseroot long before the Panic, possibly before Aldominans colonized the heartland. They developed great power and, at the end of their natural life, sought to give back to their birthplace by donating their skull to Aterika'kaal.

Around the time of the Panic, Dyre donated many of their bones to protect the people of Sangfielle. Their sternum was given as a gift to the people of Sapodilla in recognition of their selflessness and hospitality in letting people in, and (until |Episode 31) protected the city from the Shape, the Course, and various other manifestations of the truth of the heartland, allowing it to flourish.

Dyre currently believes that he needs his bones back in order to use a greater power to defend people from what may be coming, and has enlisted the Blackwick Group to aid in this recovery.
