Fawn is a Fox of Mistwood. Despite appearing to be a small animal, she can speak, and is a haberdasher and leather worker.
Appearance
Fawn looks like a bush dog, also known as a vinegar fox, a small four-legged brown creature the size of a dog. She is described as potato-like. She wears a cape, four toeless boots, a brass pendant that looks like a door knocker, and a hat with a stuffed bird on it. She has patterns shaved into her haunch fur, and gold-capped teeth.

The power of Umbra at the end of the journey changes her into a being whose face is a leather mask of a beautiful woman's face, her eyes closed. She is wearing a thick brown fur cloak which covers whatever the rest of her body might be. She also has visible hands (the same hands she once secretly used on her haberdashery and leatherwork) made of wood, stone or tanned flesh.
History and Involvement
Fawn has a complicated history which includes ancient battles with Pompona Legatus and other hogs. Her home is in the Mistwood, and she is most comfortable sleeping inside a log. Although some people assume she was turned into a bush dog by a curse or some other magic, she has stated that this is not the case.[1] She has some method through which she can do handicrafts.
On the island of Sleeping Cinder Cone, she seeks out a statue of disembodied hands holding a bird, with the index finger of one of the hands tied with string. This appears to have something to do with her history, but she doesn't explain it. Caspian vaguely recalls the bird in the statue being referenced in ancient songs.[2]

In the third leg of their journey, it is revealed that in her pack she keeps two hands which she can animate, as if they her own hands, to work on her crafts. After reaching Umbra, she is physically transformed, and takes on the role of Hedge Magus of Mistwood.
