Spoiler: What Happened at Bell Metal Station Arc
This page contains information that is a spoiler for What Happened at Bell Metal Station. If you do not wish to know the secrets of the heartland, please turn back. |
Calen fel Dynestia is a pathetic little worm[1] of a devil who is a member of the Shape Knights of the Bell Metal Band[2].
Appearance
Calen is a devil man with pasty purple-gray skin and small black horns. He looks like Hugh Dancy as Will Graham (in the show Hannibal) at his more fucked up. He wears somewhat out-of-date Sapodillan fashion, an Elizabethan-styled black doublet and pants with a ruff, and a sleeveless train metal jerkin.[2] It is not consistent whether he wears glasses.
History
Calen was born into a noble family in Sapodilla, who had not had sufficient standing to escape the Heartland when the Panic came. He was under pressure from his parents, who wanted him to earn them the right to return to Aldomina. His ambitions changed to joining the Shape Knights, to be close with his friends, and finally to join the Wrights of the Seventh Sun and change the world with Zevunzolia.
Calen's lab in Bell Metal Station contains a number of booby traps and a pinboard of various descriptions and pictures of places with utopian visions of themselves, which he describes as “shadows of Zevunzolia, the one true utopia”. His thesis in the same location, “A Hollow Structure: On the Unlife of the Shape”, argues that a mechanical lifeform — such as a train, or a man filled with bugs — is inherently different from regular humans due to not having a single soul, and the exploitation of such a creature can easily be ethically written off. A member of the Wrights of the Seventh Sun, possibly Mabriella du Feza, praised this idea as useful for "the labor problem" required further evidence for a proof of concept.[2] So, he tricked his lover[3] into assisting with this: he turned them into a train, while implying that this would be reversible.[1] Now as the Red Zephyr, Fezh attacked the station for a month straight, aiming to kill Calen, but was unable to break through the walls.[4]
When Pickman discovered evidence in Calen's lab of his crimes, she dragged him out of bed to confront him, and was exiled from Bell Metal Station by Erm when this got heated and he witnessed her threatening to throw Calen down the stairs. However, Duvall and Lyke were able to convince Erm that Calen had turned Fezh into a train, and Erm locked him in the armory to await more evidence of his crimes.
Following the Bell Metal incident, Calen was appointed to the ranks of the Wrights of the Seventh Sun as the Four of Bread[5], and was seen at Bluerock Quarry sourcing its stone to build a tower to Zevunzolia.[6] As the tower is being built at Bell Metal Station itself, it is presumed that he escaped the armory.
