Benthos is a gas giant which gives its name to its entire planetary system, as it is the largest planet within. It has prominent rings of rock, which are mined by the Jeweled Heirs of Privign. The asteroid which carries Privign is locked in a decaying orbit, bringing it ever closer to falling into the planet.

About twelve thousand years ago, before its crash on Quire, Independence was originally believed by the Rapid Evening to be heading for the Benthos system.[1] Some sort of strange message, currently decayed and unintelligible to the Fleet, was sent from the system several thousands of years ago.[2]
