The Understanding is a group of six formed during the Second Spring. They conducted a false flag operation against the Grey Duke and his people using augury, in order to get them to ally with the Last University (staging the magic as reconfiguration done by Galenica).
Benjamin ends up investigating the group and using his own augury to discover their names, which he reveals to everyone. In response, Adaire, Hella and their family flee the University.
