Elena Flores[1] was a golden gloves boxer who gained the attention of the Veranda family, who then kidnapped her and genetically experimented on her to make her into a better boxer. These experiments worked, giving Elena super strength, and she used these abilities to escape by knocking her captors unconscious and punching through a wall.[2]
After her escape, she had a moment where she was taking her anger out on people who were "bad but not that bad", and decided that she wanted something that would channel her anger into a force for good - becoming The Champ and then teaming up with Paternoster, Grouse, and Mr Good has become that for her. Prior to the group team-up, she had worked with Grouse a few times.[2]
Prior to getting superpowers, her in ring name was ‘La Flore Le Tal’. She was known for having a “good chin” (aka good at being punched in the face).
Marcus Arailius Smith was her old boxing trainer and knows about her new superhero powers. Elena previously lived in the back room of the boxing gym he owns. She trains there, as well as at the Firebird Gym with Tawny Buck.[2]
After returning to Bluff City with Mary Merisi, the two started their own private investigator agency named Guns and Smoke.
For further information on Elena, see 'The Champ' by Ghostface Killa.
Appearance
Elena is Hispanic, with callused hands and a general "neighborhood hero" look (similar to Daredevil). Her civilian clothes lean more towards a baggy, Rocky-montage style sweatsuit. Her costume is "a cool special hero hoodie", with the top of her outfit as a cross between a flack jacket and a hoodie with the print of a championship belt on it, a domino mask, tight pants with purple hashtags on them, and mid-calf metal boots. When first seen in When Justice Is Done, she is 17 years old.
When seen in Extracurricular: Out Of Time, she is 18 or 19 years old. Her style in this arc is similar to "a 1920s Avril Lavigne". She wears a flapper dress with a tie and a hat (in a style similar to the dress from “Prada 2011 sketch blue” collection).[3] When attending Gale Green's party later in the arc, she is dressed in a slim black evening gown with a long white fur coat.[4]
Abilities
The genetic experiments done to her have “turned [up her boxing abilities] to 11 but up to 15 or 16”. She uses kinetic energy to power up her punches to a superpowered level.
When using her powers, her hands glow with orange light.
Masks Moves (The Bull)
Art is throwing haymakers as the genetically modified brawler, The Champ, using the Bull playbook from Masks. Bulls are designed to be like 80s-90s era Wolverine, caught between a rival and a love--and those are both understood nice and broadly. And Art's already beginning to lean into those things in fun ways.
