False War is a popular card game within the world of Sangfielle.
Rules
False War is based on the real-world game of War. Each player places a bet on the round.
A round consists of three 'lanes' upon which each player draws three cards and places each face-down in one of the three lanes as they see fit. Once these are placed, a fourth card is drawn and then placed over one of the three previously placed lane cards. Once all cards are placed, each lane's cards are then revealed and resolved as with normal War rules: The higher face value wins. If the values are the same, a 'war' occurs where each player places three more cards face down in the lane and a fourth card is revealed. The higher value card again determines who wins. The winner takes all the cards in the lane. If there is a tie again, this is repeated until there is a final winner.
True False War is as above, but instead of returning cards to the deck, the winner of a round takes and keeps all the cards on the table and more rounds are played until one player has all the cards. Each player is initially dealt half the deck as their individual 'draw' piles and reshuffling their 'winnings' when the draw piles run out.
Tournament
“
Marn, you could win a boat!”
A False War tournament was an ongoing event through the Jade Moon arc.
Duvall caused quite a stir in the first round, as he was attempting to investigate the nature of luck by slapping down cards without looking at them. This did not prove an effective strategy.
Lye Lychen was the favorite to win in the finals, which were played in the True False War format, as he had played extremely well. However, he disappeared from the boat days before — to his dismay when he realized he would not be able to attend. Instead, a losers' tournament would be held, the winner of which would place in the final.
Pickman agreed to cheat and help Duvall win this and then the entire tournament in exchange for half the winnings. They pulled this off, gaining a collection of the ephemera people had paid to enter.
The Wrights of the Seventh Sun Deck
The Wrights of the Seven Suns Deck used on the Jade Moon Riverboat tournaments contains six suits with ten face values each, for a total of 60 cards. Copies are also owned by Mabriella du Feza (whose deck was taken by Pickman) and Hazard.
