Laris is a cousin of Cassander and a high curate of the eidolon of communication, commerce, and conquest. Their family sends them to Counterweight to negotiate a trade agreement and smooth over tensions in the wake of publicity around the Netted Wave. Cass is asked to serve as a guide and bodyguard for them during their visit, but refuses.
