Hedy Braum is a charismatic young woman from Marielda's Canopy Row who persuaded a group to go search the southwestern forest for wood during spring of the Quiet Year. When the group returned, she had disappeared, but they denied her having been with them.
That autumn, people started finding the bodies of those who had disappeared in the woods, including Hedy's.
