Gentle The-Night-You-Were-Born was a faculty member at Memoriam College who was proctoring (or "envigilating") for their entrance exams the week of The Valentine Affair. He was sick and skipped the banquet to get to bed early, but was woken by Edmund Hitchcock, who introduced himself as Professor Hectares and asked to borrow a map, ostensibly to show Prelate Silas the way to the bathroom.

Gentle wears a pair of pince-nez glasses. At the time Hitchcock woke him, he was in a nightcap and gown.
